Tangling with the Fly Rod

IT TOOK A LOT OF PRACTICE casting my spin fishing gear before I could cast a lure a great distance into the ocean. In the beginning I had many missed casts and my lure would get caught in the wind and land behind me or down the beach to the left or to the right—anywhere but in the water. Reading fishing books helped, but there was no book that could teach me the subtle techniques of fishing and casting. Secret fishing techniques were mostly passed down through families and close fishing friends. Until I found my mentor, Jackie, I was struggling.

I learned to cast mostly by observing experienced fishermen. I have been told that I cast like a man. I don’t know what that looks like, but since all the fishermen on the beach at the time were men, that makes sense. I believe that the distance and accuracy of a cast is achieved by technique rather than strength.

I had been surfcasting for more than twenty years before I became interested in fly fishing. I had seen a few local fishermen use a fly rod, like Roberto Germani, Cooper Gilkes, and Kib Bramhall, but the more widely used method to fish in saltwater was surfcasting with a ten- to twelve-foot surf rod. With a surf rod, the lure that you throw carries the line off the spool. With a fly rod the heavy line carries the fly. The casting techniques are almost opposite from each other.
